Years with current organization: Over 31 years

Years in career field: Over 31 years

What encouraged you to work in this career field?
My brother who was an LCSO Sergeant at the time encouraged me to volunteer as a Reserve Deputy, it took off from there.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
The people I work with are like a second family to me. I enjoy leading them and seeing their successes.

What do you enjoy most about your work?
The people inside the organization and the community I interact with on a regular basis.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?
While I have hit many milestones during my 31 years here, I would have to say that being appointed Sheriff by Governor Scott was the high point.

What motivates you daily?
It is difficult to explain, but my enthusiasm for this job has always been at a high level. There has always been a new opportunity to challenge me just when I get comfortable. I say the only thing constant in this field is change and I have always welcomed that change as an opportunity.

What education/training does a person need to get started in your field?
The basic requirements for employment as a deputy sheriff are two years of college or four years of military experience.

What advice do you have for those considering entering into a career in your career field?
I think it is more than just a career, it is a calling. Be sure you really want to go into this field as a profession and if you do, go with your eyes and mind open. This is not an easy career and there will be many sacrifices to be made. We say this is NOT an 8-5 job. Be sure that you have a servant’s heart and if you do it will serve you well.

What would you have done differently?
What would I have done differently, perhaps I would have completed my education (Bachelor’s Degree) prior to starting or earlier in my career, prior to starting my family.
